چکیده

While it is known that beluga whales ( Delphinapterus leucas (Pallas, 1776)) are social animals, sociality within populations remains complex and poorly understood. Using aerial photographs taken in mid-July early August 2019, we examined group characteristics spatial organization of the Eastern Beaufort Sea population two distinct summering areas: (1) continental shelf offshore region southeast (2) inshore Mackenzie Estuary. Observations revealed mean size was similar both environments. A piecewise regression analysis showed belugas were found to be most frequently 24.6 m another 22.0 inshore. The interindividual distance groups composed subadults (or) adults greater than including younger Also, swimming direction individuals a differed less We suggest habitat shapes types activity conducted cohesion persists across environmental conditions but changes with age composition. By identifying elements structure important areas for belugas, our results highlight value conservation.

Beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas) vocalizations and call classification from the eastern Beaufort Sea population.

Beluga whales, Delphinapterus leucas, have a graded call system; call types exist on a continuum making classification challenging. A description of vocalizations from the eastern Beaufort Sea beluga population during its spring migration are presented here, using both a non-parametric classification tree analysis (CART), and a Random Forest analysis. Twelve frequency and duration measurements ...

Habitat selection by two beluga whale populations in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas

There has been extensive sea ice loss in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas where two beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas) populations occur between July-November. Our goal was to develop population-specific beluga habitat selection models that quantify relative use of sea ice and bathymetric features related to oceanographic processes, which can provide context to the importance of changing sea ice...

Spatial components of bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) distribution in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea

Bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) on their fall migration are exposed to oil exploration activities in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea. While previous research into the effect of industrial noise on whale behavior and distribution has noted significant responses, this research has often proceeded from a parametric statistical framework. To account for the presence of spatially autocorrelated and int...

Bowhead whale body condition and links to summer sea ice and upwelling in the Beaufort Sea

We examined the response of bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) body condition to summer sea ice conditions and upwelling-favorable winds. We used a long-term dataset collected from whales of the Bering–Chukchi–Beaufort Seas (BCB) stock to estimate various body condition indices (BCI’s) for individual whales that were harvested by Alaskan Eskimos. A series of offshore regions frequented by bowhe...
